Chicken School Blog

Monday 13th April 2015

We took delivery of 13 eggs today.  They are in an incubator at the moment, which is kept at just the right temperature.  We are listening and looking out for the first signs of hatching!  Val from the Chicken School said that we could have some hatching from Wednesday onwards.

After school, Mrs Scully thought she saw one of the eggs move.  Mrs McIntyre said she was seeing things!!

How many do you think will hatch?

Tuesday 14th April 2015

Exciting news!  Nico and Eva were very excited when they noticed that three eggs had small cracks in them! They rushed to tell Mrs Scully!!

The cracks are called pip marks. The chicks will now be working really hard to peck their way out of the egg by means of the egg tooth. The egg tooth is on the end of the chick's top beak and will fall off soon after hatching.

We have got the brooder ready for the newly hatched chicks!  Mrs Scully can't wait to come into school to see how many have hatched!  More news to follow...

8 a.m.  - We have one chick so far! Now we need to think of a name! It will need to stay in the incubator for a few hours to dry out and then we will transfer it to the brooder.

More eggs are pipping. We are expecting more arrivals by the end of the day.

11 a.m. - The chick is really trying hard to break free from the egg...

Maybe a little help from a friend will do it!
