Morfa Bay Thursday

Wow! We are finding it hard to believe that the end of the week is almost upon us… what a week it has been.

The children continued to excel in the activities yesterday. We saw some very brave cavers squeezing in and out of tight spaces and sliding through the mud in the dark depths of the Green Bridge Cave system. As always, this is one of the activities that the children initially fear the most and as always it is the activity that the children get a huge sense of achievement from. The worry and anxiety often changes to excitement and a desire to stay longer underground.

One of the surprises this week is how much the children have enjoyed the orienteering activity. Apparently it has been the talk of the girl’s dorm and many of the children just couldn’t wait to have a go. What we did see was some excellent map reading skills and number of unexpected leaders emerging as the children scrambled around the woods.

The children continued to demonstrate our Colebrook STAR qualities, in particular ‘strive’ and ‘reflect’. In the archery a number of children found it a difficult but instead of giving up, they listened to the advice given and pushed themselves harder. This led to a number of really significant improvements throughout the session (even if the bows were bigger than some of our smaller members of the group!).

Bushcraft was another great session today where our children were able to demonstrate their excellent knowledge and skills gained through Colebrook’s Forest School sessions. Feedback from the staff was very positive indeed. The children went into the session super confident and enjoyed exploring the four essential survival requirements: Shelter, heat, water and food.

This evening we had the disco where there were more hijinks than the high ropes. Colebrook were out in full force on the dancefloor putting into practice all their moves and grooves. As per usual we had laughter, joy, sadness and tears ( and that was just the staff!).

Currently the scores for the room inspection are incredibly close with no clear winner. Yesterday the girls were ahead by only half a point. If the boys can pull off full marks today, then it could be their time to shine. However the girls have been consistently good all week. We wouldn’t want to call it!

Morfa Bay Quote of the Day:

Whilst exploring the concept of ‘edible or deadible’ food sources that can be found naturally in the UK, questions were posed to the children:

Instructor: Who can tell me what fruits grow naturally and can be found in the UK?

Child: Bananas.

Instructor: Ok who can tell me what nuts grow naturally in our country that we could forage for?

Same Child: Salted Cashews

Hmmm… Mrs Scully…we may have a problem…
